MG TD TF 1500 - Rear oil seal conversionI have
I have been involved with 5 conversions and have always had difficulty getting the seal lip over the cut edge of the speedisleeve.
I have just done my own and noticed the plastic bags off my new pistons are a loose fit over the crank flange. I greased the flange, slipped the open end over it, slid the seal up to the flange and just pulled the bag and seal over it. Easy. The front end is now also line bored to accept a lip seal. Now after 48 years I will be able to visit friends without carrying sheets of cardboard to soak up the oil. Ray TF 2884 |

Hi Jan, I have every confidence, we had one leak in five conversions. This was with the old Moss kit located by the original 3 setscrews. The block had been line-bored which shifted the crank outside the seal limits. The engine was in and out a few times before we twigged it. It was in a TD,so easy. If it had been my TF I think I would have sold it, ;-} Ray |

Hi Ray, Wasn't really thinking necessarily of the conversion but more of all the other places that oil seems after a short while to escape from. Mind you helps keep the undercarriage from rusting. |

That appears to be it. Engine back in, been given a few good runs and few stop and stands. Left overnight with cardboard under the engine, no drips either end. After 48 years I have no leaks.(I hope) I now have to let all the cuts and bruises heal, taking the engine out of a TF is something you think about carefully. ie "do I really need take it out" & "what should I renew While it is out" & "am I getting too old for this" Ray TF 2884 |

500 points for the term "twigged it". Not in the USA vernacular and I had to Google it. :-) |
