MG TD TF 1500 - Rear Springs

My TF is a little lower at one side. The dimensions from the wheel centre to the edge of the mudguard are 14 1/4" and 14 3/4". It is possible that one wing is higher though. I have noticed that the shackles are at different angles and attach a photo showing one. I will post another snap of the other side. Can anyone who has a TF with perfect springs please advise.

Cheers

And the other side

Jan,
Your right side spring seems to have a slight negative camber, is this the side that is down?. TF springs should be flat, I have mentioned before that I have TD springs as it stops the constant bottoming out on our unrepaired roads.

Agreed, that is the way it looks to me as well. The springs needs recambering or replacing.

I would suggest that you check the total length of the springs. I have found a few that wer as much as 1/2" difference.

Hi JanT. My TF1250 with newish springs both lay virtually flat or slightly concave (ends higher than middle).Admittedly did restore/renovate the originals myself but satisfied. Would add that an inverted spring in my opinion would indicate a vehicle being overloaded. My shackles are at 90 degrees to the chassis as your offside and not angled like the nearside.

Also when checking rear springs you should jack the car up in the centre of the front cross member. This will take out any interference from the front springs or ARB if fitted.

Possibly dumb question: Could the right side spring leaves be upside down? Undo the spring pack and rotate each leaf half a turn? I've never seen springs arced upward in the middle. Just wondering. Jud

Jan, the best way to check your springs is off the car, so that you can compare dimensions with the workshop manual. This won't help with spring rate but that wasn't your question. My springs, on the car when I bought it 6 years ago, were flat under static load but hit the upper stops on poor roads. Further checking showed them to be modern replicas that were not to spec, as supplied by certain well known MG parts retailers. I had new ones made by Owen Springs to the spec detailed in the workshop manual and they have performed perfectly even at speed on rough roads with a loaded car. Your springs look to be original design, but looks can deceive!
