MG TD TF 1500 - Rectangular stop light lens fastening

My TD (4139) does not have fixed nuts on the inside of the fenders for the stoplight lens to attach to.

I see no markings indicating that anything was ever welded there.

From pictures I have found. It looks like there was a spot welded tab over the hole that allowed the shouldered/tapered lens bolt to fit into.

My fenders are original (as far as I can tell)

Any others run into just open holes for the taillight lens.

I did see a short discussion on this in the archives, but it did not clarify this.

Bruce: There were some fenders in late 52 that were basically 53 fenders without the raised plynths and used the rectangular lamps, but I am unaware of anything early on. My car is one of these TD19629.

Can you share a picture of your rear fender from the top side?

Christopher Couper

My 1950 TD does not have a captive nut behind the tail lights, nor ever did. I simply use a plain washer, lock washer, and a nut for each of the two screws.
Lew Palmer

So it sounds like the very early cars and the 53 cars had no tabs. Makes sense for the 53 cars since the screws came from the back, but the early cars and late 52 cars had to do like Lew stated. My late 52 setup is exactly the same.

For those of you following at home attached is a picture from LED LaVerne showing the tabs.

Interestingly I have no pictures of my car from the underside here.

Christopher Couper

That image was from TD 14770 Chris. The TD 1250 does not have those tabs. I see them on the Original TD site on car TD 11272...photo 45

Correction....that was TD 14710

Yeah. TD11272 is the earliest picture I have. Just need to get down into the lower digits about TD1250 and see if we can find out where it flips.
Christopher Couper

Chris. Here is the back of the fender.

Also the underside. I don't see any indication of a spot weld in the area it is on La Vern's picture.

In Lazarus, TD10855 (Oct. '51) , the mounting screws go through the welded on tabs. BUd
