MG TD TF 1500 - Redneck Paint Booth Goes Uptown
For years, I used a couple of six-foot ladders, some 2X4s, and a plastic sheet to make a temporary paint booth for small parts. I recently bought an eight-foot tall, 10' X 10' pop-up canopy with mesh sides to replace the ladders and plastic. I used it yesterday to paint my radiator and other small parts. The mesh gave ventilation and appears to have contained HVLP overspray. I like it.
If I had space, I would use it inside my garage. I believe that the mesh would keep most of the overspray off of my tools. Large enough to paint a tub? It's light duty. Not recommended for wind or rain. It cost $125 with free delivery. I noticed today that the price has been reduced to $112 with free delivery. Florida must be pretty lenient on that stuff. You'd never get away with doing that in the front yard around here! Well, maybe for small parts I guess. I do paint a lot in the front yard but not in a booth. But a friend in LA County was painting his truck in his garage and the city came down on him. |

I sat up my ladder "paint booth" in the back of the house hidden from the street. Florida's 95-degree August temps forced me to set up the canopy under partial shade on the side of the house. The prez of the home owners' association lives across the street and casually stopped by to see what I was doing. He insinuated that I might be wrong. I may have to return to the back of house and pray for cooler weather. Lonnie TF7211 |

It looks cool. I would think if you put off some offset plastic sheeting a few feet away from the mesh it would contain all overspray. Not sure you you would do that without some form of freestanding support. |

And an HOA no less! That's the only thing worse than a city vehicle pulling up. You're a brave man. :) |

You don't want plastic sheeting to catch overspray as the paint flakes off and that can create bigger problems - use paper instead, as the paint sticks. I bought a poly tunnel for my spray painting, lined the bottom half with paper and erected it in my garage. An extraction system was set up using the inlet side of a large blower against one mesh window and filter pads on the others. Dave H |
