MG TD TF 1500 - Remove carpet - contact cement?
Is it possible / practical to remove the rear bulkhead carpet from my TF and re-use. If so, how? I installed Moss carpet kit four years ago. Glued the piece to the rear bulkhead with contact cement. Removing it to restore car. Moss can custom-make the piece of needed. All other carpet can be reused. Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 |

Start to peel it back then carefully cut the adhesive line with a brand new craft knife blade. You will have to keep cutting the line until the carpet is loose. I know that if you get contact adhesive onto the face of a carpet who can clean it off by rubbing with light machine oil. This surrounds the glue and forms balls which can be brushed off. Any oil stains can then be cleaned off with shampoo and water. Jan T |

The solvent for contact cement is methyl-ethyl-ketone (MEK), also called butanone. You MUST use it outdoors with PLENTY of ventilation and avoid all skin and eye contact. It will also melt plastics, but your carpet and wood should be fine with it (test a small patch of the carpet first, of course). |

A heat gun should soften the contact cement to help allow pulling off. Jim B. |

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll try to save the carpet using your suggestions. The rubber backing on the carpet is pulling loose. I'll probably end up buying a replacement piece from Moss. Lonnie TF7211 |

Lonnie I did the same thing. I tried to salvage the bulkhead carpet, mainly because it was so much work to place the new one. I tried, like you, and failed. I think you will be very happy with the work when you have new carpet back behind the seats. Tom '54 TF |
