MG TD TF 1500 - Removing Front Wheel Bearing

Resolving the sticking brake problem has required me to use a puller to remove the front drums. The inner bearing has stuck on one of the front stub axles. The legs on my puller will not fit under the bearing so I will have to fabricate something. Has anyone made up a suitable puller.

Jan, you reckon that caused by improper (long) length of spindle spacer piece? You might consider taking the leap and converting to tapered front wheel bearings. I found that sticking problem finally went away when I did it. Was a real bitch to get the new length (a little longer) on the spindle spacer, as I wanted to use a single ultra hard steel add on shim, rather than several thinner shims. Though they do sell a spindle spacer just for the tapered bearings, and that makes it easier to shim just right.

Think you should be able to get a knife edge puller plate behind the bearing. Bushies method is to bust of the outer bearing, grind away the OD of the inner down to 0.010 and hit the ground section with a cold chisel thus spreading the inner to release it from the axle.

I had to use parts from two bearing pullers,, go to Buds T TALK web site

Hi Jan.. come over and take my puller, I have left it for you in the woodshed. Bill

Thanks for your concern Steve. The bad stuff was south of us by Florida. Bud

I am going to pull the bearing off tomorrow using Bill Martin's purpose modified puller. If the standard, parallel ball bearing is damaged is it worthwhile fitting taper roller bearings. If so does anyone have the relevant part numbers, nominal length of the spacer and can MG B shims be used to set the play.

I did this modification but found that the spacer wouldn't fit after the roller bearings were installed. Then I read several posts that said that without the spacer there was a chance your spindle could break. Having said that, Dave DuBois has the information you are looking for regarding procedure and p/n. Contact him at SUfuelpumps at donobi.net

Hi Tim,

I entered into a long, on line discussion, on fitting tapered wheel bearing to my pre war MG. A number of owners maintained a spacer was unnecessary but I totally disagree. The two inner cones need to be locked sold against each other with the spacer in between them. The necessary play is set by the length of the spacer which is adjusted by shims.

Hey Jan. That is really why I removed the tapered bearings on my TD. But, then again, there are guys who have been running them without spacers for 20 years. I wonder if there is someone here who had tapered bearings without the spacer on their T series and broke or damaged a spindle?

Jan: Can't remember if you have wires or slotted wheels. If you have wires a hack I use is to put a socket under the knockoff that allows a few threads of the knock to go on. Put the shaft opening on the head of the spindle and bolt/nut end under the knockoff. Then I whack the knockoff with the wheel hammer to tighten it. That forces the hub to move away from the shaft. Usually once you get them broken loose you are OK, but if needed you can go dig up another socket that spaces it out OK and repeat.

My version of a no cost puller.
