MG TD TF 1500 - Removing speedometer cable
My speedo in my TF 1500 is making a horrible screeching noise and I have been told that the cable needs lubricating. I removed the covering below the dash, unscrewed the speedo cable and removed the circlip. I was unable to pull out the internal cable so that I could lubricate it. Is there a trick to this? |

What about a circlip on the other end? |

Are you sure the right cable is fitted? I have never seen a circlip fitted at the speedo head. Regards Declan |

I meant at the gearbox end. It sounded like he removed the cable from the speedo head and was trying to extract the cable from the top. |

Yes, I was trying to remove it from the speedo end. I did wonder whether there was a circlip at the other end. Without a hoist, how do you access the other end of it? |

Jo, Jack the car and support it with stands so that it is safe to crawl under it. There is a large brass (26 TPI) union nut at the rear of the gearbox on the RHS where the cable enters the box. Undo this nut and the cable should come clear. Access may be inhibited due to the cut out in the floorboards. There is no circlip retraining the outer cable to the gearbox unless a Ford T9 has been fitted. Regards Declan |

There is a circlip at both ends. A very small one at the gauges but it is there. It's to keep the head of the cable from coming out of the gauge. |

Thank you for your assistance. I took the car for a drive today and the screeching noise has stopped. Lubricating the speedo end of the cable seems to have done the trick. I will keep in mind your advice if it starts to make a noise again and lubricate both ends. |
