MG TD TF 1500 - Removing the gear on the starter
Took the bendix apart on a starter for the TD. Need to replace the gear. Got all the parts off except the gear. Looked in the archives and did not find an answer.![]() |

Bruce, This is a common problem, what happens is the end of the splines on the armature get splayed out preventing the gear assembly from sliding off. You need to hold the gear in a vice and tap the end of the shaft with a soft hammer. Before rebuilding you should file off the burrs. John 52 TD |

Start with a good dose of light oil Bruce and work it all over. They usually come off after you work it in and get a little physical with it. Clean it up well and get rid of the oil before reassembly

Thats the problem I had when doing my starter a few weeks back. I just used a small file to take the burr off it does not take much but the dog will then just slid off. ![]() |

Thanks All. Just to clarify. It is just sticking on the upper edge of the armature here? ![]() |

As usual, I got the correct answer. Just a little tapping and it came off. Interestingly, I have two that are original and one that must have been a later replacement. The originals have the tabs in the gear body. In the later one, the gear body is solid and the end is rolled over the Control Nut, |
