MG TD TF 1500 - Replacement Engine Plate
Hi all Today I purchased a Y Tourer as I had decided that I need a 1950s MG to drive whilst I continue with the 40 year rebuilt of my TD. On inspection I noticed the engine is not that shown on the ID plate. The engine has a square "Replacement Engine" tag (as shown on attached photo) where the normal engine tag goes. Note the number starts with a "B". Cheers Stuart ps. I will post more photos over on the Y BBS. ![]() |

Hi Stuart, Please check the archive on "Replacement engine" (this sentence, title only) Erik |

Erik I started this thread and added the photo of the engine tag, as I haven't seen a photo of a similar tag in Archive threads on on the Original TD pages. I note that this engine is in a Y Tourer, but I doubt that would matter as the engine is an XPAG. Stuart |

HERE IS ONE ANSWER,, Posted 30 August 2014 at 18:32:06 UK time D. Sander, Vermont, USA This looks like a factory rebuilt engine. The factory rebuilt engines had a rectangular tag with the engine bore oversize and crankshaft undersize stamped on them. The "Gold seal" engines were painted bright gold/bronze color. An MG dealer could install a replacemt engine in a mater of hours sending the owner on their way, and their blown engine would be sent back to the factory for reconditioning. David STEVE |

Hi Steve Yes, I read Dave Sander's post and his article on factory rebuilt engines and "Gold Seal" engines on The Original TD web pages. I haven't investigated the engine enough to determine if it was originally painted gold/bronze. The above tag is the only indication that it is a replacement engine. The attached photo of left side of engine shows no other tags. Stuart ![]() |

I am certain there were also "Silver Seal" replacement engines available from BMC. They had fewer new parts than Gold Seal ones. I recall having one in a Frog Eye Sprite and that would be an A Series engine. Don't know if Silver Seals were available for EXPAGs Jan T |
