MG TD TF 1500 - Replacing Rear Hub Oil Seal
An enthusiast is installing new half shafts and asked for advice in replacing the Rear Hub Oil Seals. I've only done it once, so thought I'd ask you folks for some suggestions to pass on. My last try was a classic wish for having bought a spare. TIA Bud

I have to ask. What went wrong before? |

I use a scrap piece of 2x4 and a mallet on the bench. |

Might not be necessary after all. Discovered that the half shafts in the old rear end are 'modern ones' and are going to be installed in the new 4.3 rear end. There's been no issue of leakage at the oil seals. So, the same axles will be going into the same seals that they've been running in since they were installed. Anybody know of any solid reason to replace the seals (or, bearings)? Really simplifies the job. Bud |

Bud,
For what it costs to change the seals and bearings If you have it all undone, I don't see why not to do it. I have only had mine apart twice in 40 odd years. Just cover the half shaft splines with duct tape when sliding on the seal to protect it. Make sure the cone is right up tight to the bearing and lube the seal well first. I also used a thin smear of Hollimar blue sealant on the seal caps and replaces the 4 bolts that secure the brake backplate with grade 8 shouldered bolts and new split washers as well. Rod |

Bud, If there is the slightest wear on the collars where the seal rides, replace them as well. Bill Chasser TD-4834 |
