MG TD TF 1500 - Restoring the bakelite - TF 1414

While the TF is hibernating in the barn for a while, I figured I would address restoring the bakelite switches, shifter knob, accelerator pedal, and hand nuts for the valve cover.

It took some time standing at the buffing wheel using the the white rouge for the first step to remove the oxidation and finish up with a nice shine on the flannel buffing wheel using the blue rouge.

I filled in the letters and numbers with Duplicator GM Bright white, let dry, and buffed with a Magic Eraser to the letters / numbers filled in. Once that was done, a quick buff on the flannel wheel to remove the fine scratches from the Magic Eraser.

It moving along until I thought of taking before after pictures, so I have one with a really bad oxidized accelerator pedal wheel next to already complete items.

Next pic after this post are the knobs on the dash. Ignore the flash from the phone camera. I couldn't wait to take a picture outdoors and it's supposed to snow tomorrow.

Now I have to decide what I'm going to do next....

Best,

Frank

A couple of coats of this isn’t bad if the basic structure is sound.

Nice work! Most people paint them with piano finish because it's easier, but yours great the way you did them.

It's going to be a really nice looking car Frank. Cheers

For those wanting to do this, as Frank pointed out, the correct buffing compound is critical. Use those only made for plastics. Others will burn/melt it.
Bruce Cunha

Looks great indeed !

C I Twidle: Great Knobs sounds like a good solution along with the plastic buffing. My problem with just buffing is my knobs are generally a brown color, even after polishing.
Christopher Couper

I think they look nicer the natural brown color, rather than dying them black.
Just my opinion.
J K Barter

Just for clarification, the brown color isn't the original finish. When new they were black.
