MG TD TF 1500 - Rubber expansion plugs XPAG
Has anyone used those rubber expansion plugs to get out of a jam when and engine spits out the metal plugs? I want to enjoy the car for a bit before I end up pulling the wing off to get a straight shot at installing a new one in the front hole over the spigot. I tried to drive one home without good results and it is weeping a bit. Dont want it coming out and risking another "ride of shame" home. The weather is not cooperating with me to get the work done as I don't have a garage and the quarters are too cramped in the trailer to fiddle with it. I don't want to epoxy it in place. I can't get a measurement of the inside diameter beyond the flycut. What size do I need to purchase? Any one?? Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

They are ok as a temporary fix. Use Tom's brass plugs for a permanent solution. Be well, David |

Plugs should not be coming out of a TD. It has a non-pressurized cooling system. If it's leaking a little, just top it up now and then. if you can get at the plug with a piece of steel rod and a hammer, just pound it in a bit tighter and see what happens. |

Bill, Here's a drawing on how to make a core plug repair unit. It can be useful for hard to get at plugs. Regards Declan ![]() |

Bill not sure which particular plug you are talking about, but I recently replaced the centre one below the manifold. i had the carbs/manifold off to discover a small leak. i replaced with steel ones and managed it with the wing on. I got my son in law who is a "big lad" to flatten it with a 4 lb hammer. I held 1/2 inch socket against the plug while he hit it. It can be done... Eddie |
