MG TD TF 1500 - Sad News - Richard Knudson

Received the following from Lisa Knudson today:

"Hello all -

We wanted to let you know that Dad passed away this morning. We thank you for the outpouring of support and prayers. He was an amazing person and touched many lives. We know he will be missed tremendously.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, September 8th at The Church of the Holy Spirit in Schenevus, NY. Reception to follow at the Oneonta Elks Club. If you plan to attend the church service, please know that parking is very limited as the church is very small. Parking on the street would probably be your best option, perhaps even a block or two away. There will, of course, be a few reserved spots for MG parking only in front of the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Knudson Churchill Scholarship Trust, 8 Woodston Lane, Palm Coast, FL 32164 or to The Church of the Holy Spirit, Arch Street, Schenevus, NY 12155.

An amazing person and responsible for much of the post production life of the MG T series and related organizations. No one will be like Dick Knudson ever again I suspect.

Those of us who drive our Tcars around owe a lot to The Rev. Dick. R.I.P. What a wonderful person. Bud

Yesterday the MG community and countless friends world wide lost The New England MG T Register co-founder, great personal friend and my mentor Dick Knudson.
Dick had the creative talent to invent many concepts we now take for granted during the early days of the collector car hobby. Many organizations have copied Dick's ideas, but nobody has topped them.
We will all surely miss the genius of Dick. Whenever I encountered a problem and needed guidance, Dick was always available. Usually, his sound advise was delivered with only a few wise words, and with a keene sense of humor. One of the most intelligent and inciteful people I have ever met.
Please keep the Knudson family and the MG community in your thoughts and prayers as we continue on without our founder, leader, and friend.
Be well,
David

Here is a picture of Dick taken last year, with the car that started it all. His 1946 MG TC. He bought this car for $100 while a Fulbright Scholar in the Netherlands. He fell in love with the car, and spent $150 to have It shipped back to the US. He drove the car across the country, and even up to Alaska.
His love for this car, the way it looked, the way it drove and the way it sounded, caused him to begin to research MGs', where they were made, why they were unique, the people who made them, their history, etc. He soon realized there must be other people with similar interests and questions, and The New England MG 'T' Register was born.

I agree with Bud. We all owe him a great deal. It is my loss to have never had the chance to meet him.

Another good one gone. Sorry to say I never met the gentleman but he sure did a lot for the marquee.
Salute ~
My condolences to the family.

So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. I met Dick back in the late 60's/early 70's, but grew to know him moreso through his writtings on behalf of The New England T Register. As previously mentioned, he without question was more responsible for the interest and promotion of the "T's" than any sigular person.
May God bless his family with his many good memories

I unfortunately never had the chance to meet Dick. For those of you that don't know, he was responsible for "The T-series Restoration Guide" as well as most all of the beautiful factory assembly line, marketing, and other black and white photos. The book was the "bible" for T-series cars in the US. By the 70s, no one knew how to do a tune-up, work on or tune SU carbs, and there were no documents anywhere about points of originality and factory modifications. I doubt that many T-series cars would be around in the US without Dick and the NEMGTR. Thoughts and prayers with family. George

I joined the NEMGTR in 1964, in the first few months of existence - nbr 100. I knew Dick very well too. He would attend the Noggin 'Natter AGM in mid winter, and would sit at the Executive Head table and said very little - he was a man of few words, but his presence and influence were always felt. As David has said, he was inciteful and gave solid guidance to his Register.

The Reverend Doctor Richard L. Knudson had an MA from the University of Maine and a PhD. He did his doctoral research whilst working at the Abingdon Works. As well, he was an ordained Anglican priest.

But most of all he was a true MG entusiast. One important but often overlooked fact about Dick, was, that whilst at Abingdon, Dick saw the "beginning of the end" as many of the important archives were slowly working their way to the dustbin. Dick intercepted many of these important documents and brought them home, where he set up his own private archive of MG lore. Many an issue of the TSO was graced with in-depth articles about MGs that came from his own material.

Dick and co-founder of the NEMGTR, the late Frank Churchill have provided a home for over 11,000 T-series owners, over the years. The picture of Dick that David Sander has provided is great but the absence of his image not sitting at that head table will remind us of the character he brought to the Register.

I attended the funeral of Frank Churchill in my MG and I'm planning to attend Dick's funeral, also in an MG.

Here is an image of Dick in New Plymouth, New Zealand lining up Cecil Kimbers SA M.G. for a photo shoot in January 1993.

We had not long completed the full restoraion of this important M.G. SA

I enjoyed many a debate with Dick about Replicas and Fakes, among other topics, and will sincerely miss the email contact.

Our Condolences to Ann and Family.

Having just now found out about Dicks passing, I would like too pass on my condolences to the Knudson family.

I attended a few of his discussion groups and through the New England MGT register know him best.

So long Dick.

I'm sure Dick was looking down over his church yesterday, and was proud. Members from The New England MG 'T' Register, SUNY Oneonta, Church of the Holy Spirit, Schenevus, and friends from the Oneonta community showed up to say their final goodbyes. The small church, built in 1888 had not seen so many people in years. It was standing room only. The weather was grey skies and rain all morning, however, the clouds broke mid-way through the ceremony. When leaving the church, we were welcomed to blue sky and sunshine. After the service we all met for a lunch and social event with the family. A great time to offer condolences, and share stories of the many special memories we have of Dick.
MGs were in attendance, including Dick's much loved TC, and Register Co-Founder Frank Churchill's TD; Numbers 1 and 2 of over 14,000 recorded Register member cars.
Safety Fast- until we met again.
