MG TD TF 1500 - Seems too good to be true

... hmmmm just thinking ... I noticed that ASL is showing a set of piston liners for the XPEG at only $48, and a set of new 1500 cc pistons for only $100. Does that mean that for $148 (plus machining), I can make my XPAG into an XPEG? And with the added benefit of an acquired increase in C/R.

Seems too good to be true.

You won't have much compression without rings to go with the pistons. Might want the larger valves, unless you already have the MkII engine. What you gonna do with those liners? Does the catalog say they will fit? If you want to keep up with the TR2's you will need more than 6 more HP.

Call Martin, @ASL they will personally check while you are on the phone

Not so. According to the (new) ASL catalogue, the 1500 pistons include gudgeon pins and RINGS. Still great value at $100.

My only reservation concerns the liner. I have a linered XPAG spare block and I've examined it closely, and I have no assurance that a set of new liners could replace the existing set. And without a doubt, an XPAG linered for 1500 cc will almost certainly impinge on the water jacket. Removing the cylinder wall to install a liner would likely weaken the entire engine; although the liner itself will restore some block integrity. All this is an area about which I know diddly-squat!

As for putting in larger valves, I would be reluctant to do this. Manley Ford will install larger valves that require an offset guide, and this in turn plays on the rockers , etc, etc. AND ... very expensive.

My present block is on its 4th rebuild (300,000 + miles) and I am already +.060 (=1310). Not sure the marginal increase to 1466 is worth the effort But I've driven some good TF1500s and there is a noticeable difference.

Oh well ... just musing.

How was the holiday down under?

Our TF 1500 lost the xpeg early in its life. It has an XPAG bored out to 1466 with a liner in number four. It kicks the pants off the TD which has MK 2 specs.

Gord, I had my XPAG block bored out to .120. It was already at .100 when I got it The engine shop sonic tested the cylinder walls and said there was plenty of thickness to go to .120. While the car is not road worthy yet I have driven it sparingly and have had the engine running for probably 60 hours (guess). So far so good.

That is a good price from AS, I did not think it would have included rings and pins. Moss has the liners for the same price, and I have noticed lately many of the Moss/AS parts are about equal price. AS does seem to go to much farther lengths to avoid questionable quality Asian parts, so I have heard. I got some AS front TC hubs last year that were made in GB. I know darn well who made them in GB, and the AS price was far below what I could have gotten them for directly from that source, retail, in the U.S. Very nice quality. Before Martin bought out AS I got a used part from them; and it is good to see they are carrying on with dealing in the used parts.
