MG TD TF 1500 - seized engine
Can't find my original post, but wanted to give a follow up on my seized engine issue. I finally got the engine out of car after 10 months ( Covid, in and out of retirement etc. ). Delivered engine from my home in Vero Beach to Glen's MG repair in St.Pete. today. They jumped on it and started a strip down on the motor while I waited. They quickly found that while my original shop did a very good job and internals, assembly etc. met specs., that the Cam bearings were not properly aligned. Set screws actually caught edge of alignment holes pressing bearing material on cam shaft. Thus creating a pinch or pressure point on cam shaft which eventually seized (593 miles) and spun in block. Good news cam okay with some light polishing. So with some new gaskets, cam bearings, and labor I should be back on the road. Double check the Cam Bearings !!!

Possibly the least expensive thing to seize. Glenn and crew are really great! Did you take 60 across? George |

Wow. Great report and glad it was a minor issue. |

Good news to be sure. Glad it wasn’t more serious. |

Yes George took 60 across, where are you located? Thought East coast/95 traffic was bad, O" my god. Wish we could Clone Glen and do a go fund me page to get him to the East coast. Although the initial cam bearing was easy to find, I jumped the gun on other internal issues. No fault of the previous engine builder, but of problematic parts (pistons) Glen can explain problems and options. So bottom line more labor cost than expected, but it will be right. Looking to do some driving before summer heat. If anyone needs something taken that direction or brought back let me know . I have a F-150 with topper and a 16' dual axle utility trailer.

Winter Haven. Brother is in Vero so have made the 60 trek many times. Any chance the piston problem was seizing piston pins? That seems to be a new thing. George |

The problem is premature oil burning and smoke with this piston design. Glen can modify these to solve the problem or the County design can be installed which solves the problem and are available thru. the parts suppliers. |
