MG TD TF 1500 - Selling for a Friend

Just a general question,
Why are so many T Types advertised as "I'm selling this car for a friend". What is the advantage of saying this, as it's probably not true anyway??

I guess it means you can claim you don't know the car, for one thing, handy when avoiding questions like "So has the engine ever exploded?"

Gents,

It is very likely that the future will see my wife the owner of an MG TD that she will undoubtedly want to sell. I would hope that a knowledgeable friend or associate from my old car club would assist her.

Sometimes what you see is not a scam but kind friends trying to help a friend in need.

Many owners of T Types and other older cars are not computer literate. However they are aware, I presume, that one of the best ways to sell a car today is through the various internet services. I'm sure their friends and family members tell them to use the internet.

I have two (older) friends that refuse to use the web for anything. They are just too stubborn to even try. But they are more than delighted when I offer to do it for them.

Guess I'm the kind of "friend" you are referring to.

Ya buy that?

Probably some of both. When I mention working on a friend's TD or TF, they are indeed real cars and people! George

Could it be that some T series owners are not exactly spring chickens and by the time they are ready to part with their car they may need a little help putting it on new fangled internet sights like ebay.

That's leaping to a rather unkind and sweeping conclusion.

As has been said before, some friends may be widows left to dispose of a car, or heirs left with same. It could be an older person not internet savvy, it could be someone who has enjoyed the car but is not connected with the online car community.

When that kind of an ad comes around I feel inclined to take it in good faith.

I just sold two MGB's within the last three months. One was for a widow friend and the other was for a friend that had lost both legs below the knee and couldn't drive the car anymore. The widow had no idea as to how to sell it and for what price. She knew nothing about the car. The fellow with the knee problem couldn't bear to sell the car himself that he had had for 20 years. I say that more often than not the ad is probably true.
