MG TD TF 1500 - sequence of works - crankshaft seal

I got the parts for sealing the crankshaft. The rear sealing comes from MOSS with a good advice and I translated it to German language for the workshop. The front sealing comes without advice but it is discussed in the forum.

But I'm not sure what will be the right sequenze because I never had dismanteled a crankshaft.

How can these two jobs be optimized?

You do not need to dismantle the crankshaft. The rear seal is attached from the outside of the engine block while the front seal will involve removing the timing cover. The oil pan should be removed for this process.

If you aren't removing the crankshaft then both the oil sump and timing cover have to come off to install the front lip seal. You then put the seal in place on the crank and install the sump and timing cover with some sealer in the grooves. Ideally do them both at once to ensure the seal is sitting straight. The rear seal should already be set and ready for the oil pan installation.

Are you talking about the standard pan to main cap seal? Or the Moss housing/modern seal thing? The two part housing with modern seal does require removing the crank. George

sorry - yes the modern seals will replace the old ones.

I recently fitted a Moss rear oil seal conversion kit and spent a few days going back and forth to the machinist to get the rear main bearing cap trimmed so the gap between the cap and seal retainer was correct.

Our engines were not made with the precision of today's engines, so machining was not even across the cap.

Due to holiday's I haven't as yet got the Y Tourer back together to give the engine a good run.
cheers
