MG TD TF 1500 - Side Curtain Box Felt

All of my cars came to me without much felt in the side curtain box (rotted or missing). Anyway, I ordered a kit from Moss and the material I got is at least 3/8" thick. This seems too thick from what I remember removing the remains from cars in past years.

Can anyone tell me how thick it should be as original and whether they have used the Moss kit on their car.
Richard Cameron

I imagine 50 plus year old felt would be much thinner due to use, age, moisture and temperature effects than when it was new. I have used two Moss kits on my cars.

It's pretty thick. Note how it is just about even with the lip of the toolbox.

Chris, is that a Tar Topper or the real thing? Sorry for the diversion.

I've not seen the original felt inside the side curtain box, nor seen the Moss kit, but I do have an original interior trim kit from a TF, except for the seats. This shows the original black felt material over the wheel arch to be no thicker than 3/16". My solution was to use black felt that was about 1/8" thick. 3/8" seems unnecessarily chunky. Especially when you read about side curtains getting stuck in there. The off white felt inside the tool box was about 3/16" to 1/4" thick and is available from a supplier in Melbourne in 3 different densities. I opted for the mid range version. Cheers

I’m with Peter on this one. The last batch I bought from Moss was closer to 3/16”-1/8”. Its the same thickness that is on the side curtain access door

The floor was slightly thick, but thinner on the lid. Photo shows factory upholstery on my car (TF). The lid felt is fairly thin, even allowing for age.

Thanks for all of the response, I guess I just got a roll of material not usable for anything TD related. Moss got me once again.

I bought my last set from AS back in 2013. Moss does seem to have inconsistencies. Last one I bought from them was patterned so I returned it and got the one from AS.

You know my thoughts on Moss. What I love about FTFU is that Doug only sells parts that he can personally guarantee are both correct AND fit for purpose. Returning stuff for exchange or reimbursement is great but the killer for us here is the shipping, as that's still on us. And boy, do we get hammered! Cheers
