MG TD TF 1500 - Side curtain mounting plate question...

I misplaced my whitworth thread gauge and I need to know what the size and thread of the threaded stud to an original side curtain mounting plate.

Repro's are different I believe.

Doing a project here to repair one of the nuts that stripped out.

If someone can check real quick is much appreciated.

If this is the bracket you are talking about, its a very loose 3/8-16.
Most likely a Whitworth thread.

If it is I have a spare you can have.
(Not the one pictured, I have 3 spares,

Frank, I concur with Jim. Comparing an original plate to a Moss repro I can't tell a difference except for the swedging of the stud to the plate. Both are 3/8"-16 and the original plate and nut thread fitment is pretty loose also. Mike TF 8087

Originally will have been 3/8 BSW thread (55degree). Maybe the nut is 3/8" - 16 UNF (60degree), making it feel loose. Just a suggestion.

Obviously that should be 3/8" UNC.

Thanks to all who responded.

I had my original mounting plates and nuts re-chromed. One of my originals on the car the "ear" of the nut was broken and I found one on EBay to complete my set. This was years ago when I first started work on the car.

It threads on but the first 3/16" of an inch is all buggered up. I didn't realize this until test fitting my side curtain frames the other day.

So, having spent money already on re-chrome I want to try to fix the one I have.

I'm going to try that Muggy Weld to repair pot metal and re-tap it. I will use a heat gun instead of flame to get the temp up to 350 in order for the rod to melt. I'm hoping using the heat gun the chrome won't "burn" blue so it won't need to be re-chromed saving me some time and money.

I've got nothing to loose to try and if it doesn't' work and I will definitely take your offer Jim B to ensure I have one of good quality and trusted source than searching for one from EBay.

I'll follow up how it works out.

Thanks,

Frank

Stick with the originals if possible. The aftermarket plates come apart easily. The stud is reduced down to 0.175" and pressed into the hole and just barely staked in place. Tightening the nut puts a lot of tension on the stud in the first place. We've had a few fall apart losing the wing nuts in the process.

I TIG weld the backside to fuse the stud to the plate, no need to add filler wire. Nut hides the discolored chrome just fine.

Frank: I am curious what the profile of you "original" nut looks like.

While hard to tell from the angle JA's looks correct where Jim N's looks like a reproduction.

IRRC the Repo is on the left and the original is on the right in this picture.
