MG TD TF 1500 - side screen wing nut

Hello,
The rear sidescreen wingnut interferes with the hood lower frame, close to the pivot. Only when the hood is folded down.
So I cannot tighten it when the hood is down.
And the hood is down when it is under the half tonneau cover which is under the rear side screen installed.

So it is impossible to tighten with the rear side screens, the hood down and the tonneau cover in place.

Is it the same for your cars ?

Laurent.

The rear side screen bracket does not use the fitting with the wing nut you show. The is a slot between the bodywork and the piping that you would slide the bracket into with the front of the sidescreen tilted up in the air and then rotate it down into position to engage the slot in the bracket to the peg inside of the slot in the body work.

I have enough clearance to spin the wingnut. It looks as if your hood pivot is mounted lower than mine. Sorry about the image quality but it's cold in the garage at the moment. Bud

Whoops.... I see you are at the front of the rear side screen...my mistake...and yest your hood pivot is lower than mine as well

Though the heighth of the top frame is correct 20.5" above the doors. according to Moss instructions.
Could be the mounting plate of the side screen which is too high ?
Though it matches the panel curve. What is the correct placement for these mounting plates ?

Laurent.

LC Laurent31

I think opinions differ on whether it should be 20.5" or 19.5" or somewhere between.

Anyway, it would lower the pivot and would be worse for the access to the wing nut.
LC Laurent31

Horst Schach in his book, The Complete MG TD Restoration Manual, also lists 20.5" as the correct top frame to top of door distance.

Tim, where is that distance measured? i.e. where along the door's top edge is it then vertically measured from (given that the door top swoops down)?
Kevin McLemore

Laurent. It seems to me that the pivot for the sidescreenis mounted to high up. With the sxcreens rear mounting bracket engaged the
pivot shsl be in the split in the forward
bracket. The tonnau shall not be under the screen when the screen is in place.

Tim, see the Moss document for the heigth of the top frame.

Thoralf, here is a picture to clarify what I said about the tonneau cover which is under the side screen.
I meant you cannot remove the tonneau with the side screen installed.

Laurent.

LC Laurent31

Kevin, here is where Moss measures the distance. Horst Schach saya, "...the distance from the horizontal bar over the door should be about 20.5 inches above the rear corner of the top of the door."

Thanks - very helpful and much appreciated. I need to move mine to the proper spot. The DPO installed it incorrectly and now that I finally have a set of sidescreens I'd like to put it right.
Kevin McLemore

Thank you all,
I guess I'll never get out of it without a correct car close to mine and many measurements.
I have probably a general geometry anomaly, the hood, the wind shield, the side screens and maybe the doors.

Laurent.

Laurent, from what I've read and heard the T Series cars were not exact duplicates of each other. With all the hand fitting and adjustment it is no wonder the exact same model and year cars can be different from each other. Perfection is not a word I would associate a 1950s and before car.
