MG TD TF 1500 - Smoking Engine
A friend has an XPAG which smokes via the oil vent pipe on the tappet cover on the side of the block. It also puts out smoke via the exhaust when he changes gear. I've suggested that it is either rings and or valve guides; perhaps sump compression which suggests ring wear. Any thoughts? (or would he be wise to take up knitting?) |

Is it blue smoke that lingers or white steam that dissipates? Bill. Chasser TD-4834 |

Leaking head gasket possibly. Dave H |

It is not steam emanating from the exhaust or oil vent pipe. Surely it can't be the head gasket for there would be a drop in performance. It could be sump compression which would indicate ring wear. |

It could be head gasket if its just a slight weep - you might not notice the drop in performance. If not steam then oil fumes, as you say from ring wear. The other more remote possibility is petrol, if the float level is set too high or a leaking float, it can dribble into the inlet manifold, and end up in the sump. Dave H |

Sounds like blow by, do a compression check leak down. I would bet it needs a ring job. PJ |
