MG TD TF 1500 - Spare tire rack lugs
Looking for some feedback from early TD owners here. The TD 1250 in my shop has UNF threads on the spare tire rack and some one bevel sided 3/4" lug nuts even though the car has BFS lugs on the wheels. Speaking with Bruce he indicated that his TD also has the same set up (possibly not the same nuts for the rack). So I'm curious as to whether the spare rack ever had BSF threads for the lugs? |

Mine on TD3042 are all BSF and have often been interchanged with those on the wheels. |

Thanks Lew. That is what I would have expected but not what I found. |

Yes BSF lugged axles have BSF lugged racks. Otherwise the cars would be carrying two different lug wrenches. |

My early TD all BSF. |

From "The T-Series Handbook" pg. 44: TD 12285 The wheel studs and nuts ….were changed from BSF to Unified threads". TD 12419 The studs and nuts securing the spare wheel to the carrier were changed from BSF to UNF threads". So there were a few cars with both threads. However, the car in question likely had the tire rack replaced at some point with a later one. George |

I totally agree George, I just never figured out why they would change the rack?. I know my car was in an accident prior to me acquiring it as I found an area of lead between the left rear fender and the door, But I have no indications that the fuel tank was damaged (It could have been replaced with the rack, and I would not know) |
