MG TD TF 1500 - Starter Armature End Cover Cap
An illustration in the TD Driver's Manual shows an end cover cap for the starter armature and I wondered if the cars were actually fitted with these during production. Does anyone know if these end covers are available from a supplier? I have a feeling that the covers may not have actually been supplied with the starters when the cars left the factory. Any input would be appreciated! |

Since we don't all have the manuals to refer to perhaps a picture would help. |

Sorry, I don't know where they are available but the end caps were fitted when the cars were new. Here's a picture of mine before I rebuilt my engine. Joe ![]() |

See the Moss Motors starter diagram, #39. Some chance I may have one in my attic junk box, will try to look this weekend. The cap keeps water, debris, etc. out of the armature/bushing. Positive they are on the original starters, not sure about the later repro/replacement ones. George |

I've got a cap on one of a pile of used starters. I have a feeling that was one of those things that got lost early on in a car's life. |

Cover same purpose here as on generator, yes? Keep out debris and make for brush checking without taking all apart. |

Thanks so much for the responses. George/David, could I purchase a cap from either one of you - I actually need two, one for the TF and one for the TD. Any help would be most appreciated! |

The WSM does not identify this cap as a lubricate point. Should we fill it with grease ? Laurent. |
LC Laurent31 |
Laurent, No don't fill it with grease. The picture is from p56 of the TD Operation Manual (not the WSM), showing its use if the starter pinion gets jammed. This used to happen to me often when I had a worn ring gear and a worn starter bushing. Joe ![]() |

I have owned my TD for 43 years and I am always amazed on things I still do not know about it. This is one. Never seen a cap on the starter rear armature. Now I have to go find one so when I do my factory restoration (yea, I know) I have it right. If anyone has a spare (after DLD gets his). I would be interested. |
Bruce Cunha |
I found one. Did David come through for DLD yet? If so Bruce, you can have mine. |
George Butz |
Let me know George if David got one. I have a lot of spares, so if you need something, let me know. |

Does the cap just press on with friction fit? Rubber? Metal? Lonnie TF7211 |

Lonnie, 'Friction fit'. Cheers Rob Grantham |

Is it metal? What kind? Lonnie TF7211 |

I'm out of town for a week. And I'd have to hunt it down when I get back. If one of you other guys has one for DLD, go ahead. |
David Littlefield |
Lonnie, The cap is metal. Nothing special, but a nice press on fit. Cheers Rob Grantham |

Good Morning - I was away from the computer yesterday and was unable to check the forum. I do need two of the covers,so if I could impose on George and Bruce to locate their spares, I would be most appreciative. If there is a problem, I can then trouble David when he returns. Bruce, George, - just let me know what arrangements would be best for you. Thanks so much in advance for your efforts on this. Best Regards, Jeffrey W. Delk |

George Butz |
