MG TD TF 1500 - Starter nut

The starter has a long brass screw for the power cable. There is a spacer that sets against the body, a washer and the brass nut. Am I missing another nut? Seems like a lot of stud sticking out.

I note that the threads don't go all the way to the body, even with the spacer, so I would assume the cable goes against the spacer and would cover the non threaded part.

Checking the nut, it is 1/4 BSF

The exploded view drawing N.14 in the Electrical Equipment chapter of the Workshop Manual shows 2-nuts, 2-spring washers and 2-flat washers, large and small.

It seems that you have a mismatch of parts on your motor. Not a problem but you need to be careful on how you reassemble the unit. You have a thin pressed steel backplate the original was cast aluminimum. the difference is in the wall thickness. the non-threaded section of the terminal should be INSIDE the motor body not as in you picture OUTSIDE. In fact it looks as if the terminal has been cut. The threaded section should be 1" long (I have just measured one from my spares). You need to ensure that the terminal is correctly insulated from the motor body. The original had a shouldered insulating bush on the inside of the plate going through the plate, and on the outside there is a flat insulating washer, then the stack of nuts and washers mentioned by David. If the terminal shorts on the body, when you pull the starter "Grosse Blitzen".

Thanks for the tip. I think I see what you are saying in the N14 exploded diagram in the shop manual. I will take a look and change it to match the diagram.

This is the original starter motor for my car (per the date on the motor). It was rebuilt back in the 1970's, so it is possible/probable the back plate was changed.

It has worked for me since that rebuild.

I have a spare. I will check it against this one. Should have the correct back plate and the needed nut on that one.

I took the starter apart today. There is a solid metal strap that comes off the middle of the field and holds the brass bolt that comes out of the case. There did not appear to be a way to shorten this without changing how it is attached to the field coil.

The insulating tube is in place.

I am assuming that when the starter was rebuilt, the field coil used may not have been the original and that the metal strap is longer than the original. This causes the screw to stick out farther. I do not think this will be an issue. The motor has worked fine for years with the screw sticking out farther.

Unfortunately, the other starter I have is a reproduction, and the parts don't work on the original.
