MG TD TF 1500 - starter throws oil into the footwell
Why does my starter throws so much oil into the footwell? The picture shows the location after cleaning a little bit. ![]() |

That end of the starter does not get any lubrication. It is designed to stay dry. Oil on these parts will collect dirt and grit. |

Check your split pin on the bottom rear of the oil pan that surrounds the flywheel cavity. My guess it's either missing and or the drain hole is plugged with grit Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

The split pin is present and shows oil drops :-(. |

It is not the starter, it is the oil leak from the rear seal being thrown by the flywheel. You effectively have a centrifugal air pump in there, you will notice that the bellhousing has a top cover which is marked for direction so it was known about when new.
I have this problem on my car and put up with it as taking the engine out of a TF is not done lightly. I was told that the water pump was put on the line and the car was built around it. Unless you really need to take the engine out just wash off when necessary. It does not seem to get on to the clutch. Ray TF 2884 |

Ray - thanks for your explanation. I'll try to seal the footwell against the gearbox cover as good as possible. |
