MG TD TF 1500 - Steering Rack Help

My workshop manual is at the machinist, and I am working on the steering rack. I installed the lock washers over the ball housing, not realizing what the two tabs on the lock washer were for. In screwing the tie rod assy into the steering rack. Now I see that there are two indentions on the rack apparently to receive the two tabs. Question is how do I get the lock washer on so that the steering rack will receive the two tabs and hold the lock washer in place? Does this question make sense?
