MG TD TF 1500 - Steering rack removal
Trying to remove a steering rack on a car that is totally down to the frame. Method in manual about twisting to one side is not working. It hits a stop. See picture below. Any suggestions or a video. Thanks Joe ![]() |

Remember.... The manual shows how to do it for a RH drive car. You may have to modify for a LH drive. ... CR |

Try removing the radiator support just above the rack. You should be able to crank the rack all the way to one side and lift it out. |

Tried the radiator support removal it still will not move because of the block in the picture above. I took into consideration the left vs right issue. Do you need to remove the ball joint? Any other thoughts? Thanks Joe |

Are you trying to remove just the pinion or the whole rack and pinion ?. |

Whole rack. Doing a frame up. Joe |

I did mine a few weeks ago with the radiator support that bolts to the frame extensions removed and after cranking the rack all the way to one side it lifted out. Did you remove the tie rod ends ? |
F. Driver |
I did not remove the tie rods. Is that the magic trick? Joe |

I did to shorten it a bit. |

Hi Joe, If you've not already done the job, can I refer you to a thread I did on 9th March 2010 - 'Removal of steering rack from a TF'. WSM is just wrong - (both) inner ball joints need to be removed for a good clearance ! Hope this helps, Cheers. John |
