MG TD TF 1500 - Still got a rattle from the engine

I posted once before that I have a rattle from the engine. Nothing too serious but annoying. If I listen with my stethoscope it is by far the loudest when the probe is placed in the centre of the carb balancer pipe. It is also pretty loud with the probe on the throttle shafts. Everywhere else I can hear the rattle but is much more subdued. If anyone has suggestion please, please let me know.

Is your exhaust pipe hangar, the first one after the header connection, loose? That created a rattle on my car.

Jan,
I had a "Chain Type" rattle for a long, long time, Surprisingly, it turned out to be a loose manifold clamp!! Seems like the aluminized coating chipped away, and the clamp was loose enough to rattle! Tightened it up and no more rattle!

Hope this helps!

Jan,
is the bolt that retains the restrictor piece in the middle of the inlet manifold tight ?. It can make a hell of a row if loose. It has been known to loose off and let the restrictor wander up and down making a mess of carb balance.

Thanks for the replies and especially the one from Ray. I didn't know there is a restrictor in the middle of the inlet manifold. The rattle is much louder when I place my stethoscope bang in the centre of the manifold and lessens when I move it to the sides. Certainly looks like a loose restrictor. I propose to buy a set of gaskets at Silverstone next week and then will dismantle the carbs/manifold to investigate.

I found out about the balance pipe 40 odd years ago. A friend bought a TD which made the noise you mention. The PO had removed the retaining bolt to fit a REDEX vacuum gauge (as we did then) and his restrictor was rattling about.
The vac gauges were fitted during the oil crisis to monitor/control fuel consumption.
