MG TD TF 1500 - Straps brake pipe on back axle
Is part number ACH8650 correct for the straks for fitting the brake pipes on the back axle? What is the correct way of fitting them? Is there a drawing with fitting instructions? |

This is how I fitted mine. There are 4 along the rear axle. The pic was taken when I replaced the original steel Bundy with copper. This has since been redone in Cunifer as copper is illegal here in NSW. Note the MGA breather mushroom. (Yeah, I know it's not original Bill but it's almost invisible). Cheers Peter TD 5801 ![]() |

Peter, I didn't say anything. I didn't even think it. But now that you mentioned it...just kidding Cheers Mate Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

J.L.E. Check thread in the archives, entitled "brake pipe routing" dated march 2013, you will find information on how to fit the straps. Peter, I like your idea of using the MGA vent. Looking closer at your picture, I see 2 errors firstly, the way you have wrapped the strap is wrong, secondly the routing of the pipe is incorrect, the way you have done it (inside the check strap) makes it liable to fail. Both of these points are explained in the thread mentioned above. John |

Hi John. I checked the thread that you mentioned & it seems there was no agreement as to the method used to secure the brake lines or the clips. I'd read that thread prior to replacing my lines. I do agree with you that routing the pipe inside the check strap is incorrect which is why I chose to avoid doing that. I have seen lines installed along the top of the axle where they could possibly be crushed by the rebound rubber under extreme road conditions. The path I chose is shown dotted at the rear of the Driver's Handbook on the diagram indicating the fluids required. See pic of my first install below. This shows the copper line, before I replaced it, hugging the rear of the axle & going out & around the check strap then returning to the axle as it makes its way towards the wheels. This makes it impossible for either the strap or rebound rubber to damage the line. I have seen other variations which include PJ's approach. Reason I went that way is that this is the more secure path & also lessens the possibility of objects e.g. sticks etc being inadvertently caught between the line & the axle when off road. Be interested to see how you secured your clips. Can you post a pic? Cheers Peter TD 5801 ![]() |

John, the first pic I posted above does show the clip installed upside down. The folded over section should be underneath not on top. This was corrected when I installed the Cunifer. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Many thanks for the tip to check the archives! I now know how to proceed. Greetings, John van den Boorn |
