MG TD TF 1500 - SU Carbs
Does anybody know why SU discontinued the vented damper cap and vented the space into the piston bell through a slanted drillway. It seems an extra unneeded machining operation. Ray TF 2884 |

Why not ask Burlen Ltd. |

Ray, The carbs with no hole in the cap are reffered to a "dustproof". I assume that, over time, it was found that dust/dirt from the engine bay found its way into the dashpot assembly, through this hole, and caused piston jamming. John |

Thanks John, that makes sense. The reason I asked is that Moss sell a damper with a cast in MG logo. They list it for all models but if fitted to a TF you have a vacuum leak which will cause a slight richness as the piston lift will be affected. Ray |

You should be able to solder the vent opening in the cap closed if you wanted to use one. |

Even JB Weld applied from inside would "block" it while leaving the appearance intact? Peter |

It is not that I wanted to use one. Just more interested in how many TF's have them unmodified. Besides that I don't have an 8 sided ring spanner :-) Ray |

Quote: Besides that I don't have an 8 sided ring spanner :-) Unquote: They are usually finger tight, that is enough. I had vented ones, swapped out during carb overhaul. Peter |

I put new brass ones into my TF H4s as the old ones were badly knocked about. The new ones have holes and the bodies also have holes. Some say you need one or the other but not both. Others, and I tend to agree with them, say having a spare isn’t a problem. The engine won’t be running for several months yet so I can’t tell if I will need to be blocking one of the holes or not. Peter, the winking face denotes that I know they are finger tight. Besides, the matching float chamber cap nuts do require an octagon spanner. Ray |
