MG TD TF 1500 - Sump filter gasket

The gasket in my TC sump gasket having disintigrated it is difficult to establish what it was/is made of. It appears to be a form of fibre but I feel that one I can easily tap out with cork would do. Comments please.

Why make one? They’re relatively inexpensive and fit correctly when installed...it’s doubtful your homemade cork one would...I know if I tried it wouldn’t.

I have not bought a gasket set for years. It is not that I am a pennypincher, I was so disappointed with the quality of what I was buying.
I lay a sheet of thick art paper over the sump and tap out a few holes to drop in locating bolts. Then gently mark off with a tack hammer, punch out the holes and cut the rest with a craft knife.
The other gaskets are the same paper or cork composite.
I also make the rear bearing strip out of two pieces of the cork bonded together ready curved to fit.

I'm with you Ray. I remember a few years ago taking a water pump off a TD I owned at the time and tapping out a gasket from a cornflakes packet on the side of the road. It was still ther when I sold the car a few years later. Or on another beside the road repair over 50 years ago using a pyjama cord as a fan belt on a mini which went in the early hours of the morning on the Thanet Way in Kent.

Not MG .
My neighbor had a compressor from Harbor Freight that had a blown head gasket and he gave it to me.
Then I found out that there are no parts available for that crap from China.
I used a cornflake box and made a gasket. Sealed it both sides with Make-a Gasket.
It ran for over one year and I sold it because I wanted a larger volume unit.
Apparently after three years it's still pumping OK.
