MG TD TF 1500 - T nuts
I believe this was covered in the past, but I wondered if anyone has come up with a vendor that has 1/4 rectangular T nuts as used on the floorboard. So far I have not found them at any of the regular suppliers. FTFU said they will try and source them. Also, was there a different type of T nut used on the left and right rear floorboard to secure the center section? ![]() |

Rectangular T-nuts were discussed in this thread on the BBS. Search the archives for this thread title: Rectangular 'T' Nuts for Floorboard The rectangular 1/4 BSF T-nuts that are in the floorboards on my TF are 1/2" wide by 1-1/4" long. Rounded on the ends. Two holes to secure with tacks. The base is not thick. See photo. I haven't found a source of rectangular BSF T-nuts, so I think that you will need to make them. That's what I plan to do for my TF side-curtain floor. (TF side-curtain compartment is not same as TD compartment.) I will weld a 1/4 BSF nut to a 1-1/4" fender washer, then trim to shape and drill holes for tacks. The extra diameter of the nut will be hidden inside the floorboard or side-curtain floor. If you want to use 1/4-20 rectangular T-nuts, then these from Display Innovations are the closest to the original ones that I have found. 250 per bag. (top photo) May be available in smaller quantities elsewhere. https://displayinnovations.com/product/t-nut-1-4-20-bag-250/ > 1/4-20 (and maybe 1/4-28) rectangular weld nuts weld nuts are similar. Google "weld nuts." (bottom photo) Lonnie TF7211 ![]() ![]() |

For BBS members who haven't seen rectangular T-nuts, Bruce's post has a photo of my TF floorboards with the rectangular and round T-nuts highlighted by arrows.
(top photo: Close-up of my TF floorboard T-nuts) Rectangular T-nuts are also used in the floor of TF side-curtain compartments. Don't know about TD compartments. See them in the cleats under the floor of Frank Cronin's TF side-curtain compartment. (bottom photo: Rectangular T-nuts in cleats on bottom of Frank Cronin's TF side-curtain compartment.) Or ... if you want to turn some T-nuts, then here is a video of one way to do it. Way above my skill set. https://youtu.be/aFHUeOo9Qy4 Lonnie TF7211 |

Here is what I have tried so far. I went to the hardware store and picked up some 1/4 20 round and rectangular T nuts. The rectangular ones are not the same dimension as those on the TD, but they worked for a test.
I rethreaded the 1/4 20 with a 1/4 26 tap. This leaves the BSF screw a tiny bit loose, but it tightens down. If I use this, I will add permatex blue (removable) to the thread. Once I get the dimensions of the original rectangular T nut, I will try find a company that makes one of a similar/same size and see if I can buy 1/4 blanks. I can then tap the blanks to 1/4 BSF. If I can get these, I will buy a quantity and make a good amount of these. NTG has the round 1/4 BSF nut, but it has cleats on it. I have asked them if they can contact their supplier and see if they can make the correct round and Rectangular nut. Lonnie. I made some 1/4 BSF round T nuts for the fuel tank side on my lathe. If I need to, I will turn out a few rectangular ones. |

Dimensions and photo of rectangular T-nuts in my first post: “The rectangular 1/4 BSF T-nuts that are in the floorboards on my TF are 1/2" wide by 1-1/4" long. Rounded on the ends. Two holes to secure with tacks. The base is not thick.” Base about the same thickness as a normal fender washer. (Not the thick ones.) I will look at the T-nuts that are mounted in my floorboards and try to estimate the height of the threaded tube if you need it. Lonnie TF7211 |

Thanks Lonnie. I have the T nut. Those dimensions will help me look for something close on line, or help me with lathing out ones. I think LaVern came up with three, but I am still going to see if I can come up with more so there are some available for others. |

I saw Bill Chassers new TD project today. It has a complete rear floor. The rear floor has 4 rectangular 1/4 BSF T nuts on the dropped edge where the middle wood panel goes. I also found 2rectangular 1/4 BSF T nuts in the wood that holds the side curtain door in place (2 per side). The wood that bolts onto the fenderwell. ![]() |
