MG TD TF 1500 - T-series external fuel gauge
This is my new T-series external fuel tank level gauge. It consists of a 400mm (16”) chromed thick walled sight glass which is bolted to one of the tank end covers with chromed munsen pipe clips lined with rubber rings to prevent sliding. The munsen clips have an M10 to BSF ¼” adapter to replace the acorn nuts on one of the tank end panels. The length of the sight glass is very close to the actual height of the tank. The float is designed to move at the angle resulting from the inclined installation. For installation I have chosen an “L” ported 3/2 way ¼” ball valve. The centre port has a 3/8” to ¼” adapter and it is designed to replace the drain plug. The ball valve has two positions
1) Horizontal. The fuel flows to the gauge and the third port is the new drain facility which is closed and plugged. 2) Vertical. The gauge is fully isolated and the plug may be removed to drain the tank. The gauge is fitted with a Teflon baffle to prevent a surge of fuel during sharp cornering. The most difficult part was making the float. Not everything that floats in water will float in petrol! The internal components and the ball valve have been sitting in a jam jar of petrol since mid-summer for fuel resistance testing. A photo of the installed gauge to follow. I am also considering graduating the glass tube to show the level in gallons or litres. Regards Declan ![]() |

A well done mechanical improvement for daily drivers. |

Good job Declan, I like that instrument it looks like on a steam engine from the past. Some years ago I build my own unit, inspired from a Motor Boot Tank and it works pretty well. ![]() |

At last MGs are catching up with my 1926 Morris Cowley which was fitted with exactly the same system except that the sight glass is in the cockpit. The Morris also has a keyless ignition system and a dynamotor which replaces athe dynamo and starter. Bob Marshall |

A good device! I have the traditional stick for my road TC! However, because I have long arms, I can reach over the back, pop the fuel cap and check fuel level while still in the drivers seat. I haven't done that for a while but last time I did it, I remember some chuckling from nearby cars! Bob Schapel |
