MG TD TF 1500 - Tail pipe heat
Exhaust question on my TF. I've had this car for ten years. It has a Bell SS exhaust, with a brand new muffler (I replaced the old one after finding a 1992 receipt for it). Car in good tune, runs well.
Today is 90 degrees. Just went for a 20 mile drive. As I was checking the car after, my leg came against the tail pipe (short pants). It burned me! The tail pipe was VERY hot to touch. I have never before noticed the exhaust at the rear to be so hot as to burn skin. Is this normal? Can it be that I have never before touched it after a drive? Possibly. Nonetheless I was very surprised. Next time you drive your car, give the tailpipe a light touch. Tell me if yours is "too hot to handle". Tom '54 TF |

Yes, A T-series tail pipe will burn you, perfectly normal. Like La Verne, I have the same problem!

Once carried my bicycle on a bike rack on the back of my TD and one of the tires was only 12 inches from the tail pipe. While driving I heard a bang and sure enough the exhaust heat had burned out the tire. Now, I make sure the bike is high enough not to be in the exhaust stream. |

Exhaust gas is likely between 900-1200 degrees F at the manifold, and will sure heat the pipe. Lots of pictures of glowing exhausts on engines on dynos on the internet. |

Yup, it's got one, 700+HP of supercharged 5.0L Coyote.

Figures :-)....the 427 belongs to my brother inlaw...he's building another similar with a Coyote....same side pipe arrangement.

Early 50's kit car...Victress.....only thing he is using is the body. He built all of the frame using the Factory Five as a guide. Everything is pretty much done except the body. I get to listen to him whine about sanding every few weeks.

Thanks everybody for confirming that hot pipes are the norm. When I installed my new Bell muffler, I realize that when I put it back together, my tail pipe finisher sticks out an inch further than before. I think that is why I brushed my leg against it for the first time in 10 years. Tom |
