MG TD TF 1500 - Tank backboard help needed
Found the first bit of wood rot today in the bottom right corner of the tank backboard. How much tin has to be removed to get the old one out and the new one in? Anyone done this without removing the rear metal tub. Tim TD12524 |

Don't know how you could do it Tim. The board goes under the quarter panels. Here's some pics. PJ

There are three countersunk screws on each side just under the quarter panel sheet metal, with nuts on the inside that bolt the backboard to the vertical metal frame rails. You have to remove the rear quarter panels to access, which is a very extensive process. You will likely find a lot of other rotten wood as I did. If just one small area, you could cut/hack it out and fab a repair piece. Some have used some type of marine repair resin that is injected into the wood. George |

Tim, I agree with George, it isn't an easy replacement and if your not intending to strip the sheet metal from the wood frame, a quick fix with a patching material of sorts might do. I also forgot to mention as George did, the board is bolted to the metal frame. PJ

Thanks PJ. I was hoping that there was some trick to getting the carriage bolts in without removing the sheet metal. I cut off the bolts on the inside and was able to slide the tank backboard out of the bottom (after removing the rear bottom rail). I have a plan for getting the board back in without removing the sheet metal. If it works I'll post it here. Thanks again for the excellent pictures and information. Regards Tim TD12524 |
