MG TD TF 1500 - Tappet cover cast alu from MOSS - who has it?

My tappet cover is chromed and not pretty anymore.

Can anyone tell how the breather pipe is mounted?
W_Mueller

The stock breather pipe does not connect to that tappet cover as the two mushroom shaped protuberances are the breathers.

If you want to continue to use the stock breather setup perhaps you can get your current cover re-chromed.

I think you will find that those two projections / mushrooms near the top are the breathers and the original breather tube is not used.

Thank you for that hints.

The original breather pipe secretes oil. Are the mushroom protuberances equipped with filters?
W_Mueller

Don't know, but they are supposed to allow vapour to escape whilst keeping oil in.

There was one of these covers in one of the many boxes in which TF2071 arrived along with an aluminium rocker cover. The PO claimed they would make a significant difference to engine noise (yet to be confirmed).

My solution has been to block off the front breather (there is no filter) with a piece of gasket paper and I fabricated a small spigot to bolt into the rear position which will allow me to connect the original breather tube via the standard 1” copper elbow. I wanted to retain this feature as I have been convinced by forum discussions that the original intention was for the lower end of the tube to be in a low pressure area below the engine thus providing some positive fume extraction. I think the neoprene gaskets will do a fair job of keeping the liquid oil inside while allowing some of the vapour to be extracted.
I intend to fit the plate, along with a spin off oil filter, when I take the panels off for painting.

The rocker cover supplied has no facility to vent to the back of the front carb so will not be fitted till I can fabricate some sort of spigot that provides the same function as the original pressed steel version that has a built in baffle to reduce the amount of oil being drawn straight into the carb. It would be easier if I could weld aluminium!

Have your original tappet cover media blasted to removed the old chrome or have it chemically stripped and then paint it. The breathers in the alloy cover from Moss do not have filters. The cork gasket acts as a baffle to an extent but the amount of mist depends on how worn your engine is, how much blow by, crankcase windage from rpm and the level of crankcase oil.

A friend had his MGB cover cad. plated and polished--best cover i've seen
It looks for all the world like a stamped out aluminium cover

We've run that cast aluminum cover for many years. It is probably 50 years old and still polishes up nice.

As previously mentioned, the gasket tries to redirect fumes in hopes oil mist will stay inside, both covers.

If your engine has an abnormally high amount of blowby, oil mist will pour out of both tappet covers. The aluminum cover will coat the engine and firewall with mist whereas the original will direct it down underneath.

Thanks for all the comments.

I guess I will go on with the old stuff.

The Moss covers are faithful reproductions of the original items and work just fine. But they don't fit over roller lifters.
