MG TD TF 1500 - TC 10,000

The OTHER TC I bought is titled TC10,000 - what are the odds (other than 1 in 10,000...) of having that car? I wonder if it is correct?

Cool chassisnumber!

Actually the odds would be 1 in 9,749 because the numbering started at 251, just like all other early MG's.

251 being the Abingdon phonenumber of the factory.

I have 10018, and I saw (and parked next to) TC 10010.

Yes, but was not the first TC0251, and the last TC10,0251? Seems to me that would make 10,000 TC's made (seems unlikely to be that neat, doesn't it?...).

The story I heard was that there was a prototype, then the first production car was TC 0251. The number I have been told for total production was 10,002. I don't know if this includes the pre production prototype or not. The last production TC should be TC 10,253, right?
The first TCs were unique, they took many parts from TA production and modified them. I've seen bulkheads with a piece welded Ito the center of it to widen it (TA bulkhead widened to TC).

David Sander - TC 10010 I think, belongs to Art Lewis from Ada, MI. Doesn't someone have the factory production records? 'T Series Handbook' dated 1981 claims the last TC on record was 10251. Anybody belong to TABC that can check their registry for a VIN? Maybe we should post this question on the TC forum page, not TD/F. FOG

I've NEVER encountered a TC number higher than TC10,251, and can't believe they exist. I am away from my original records right now, but will check this weekend.

Gene's reference is a great resource, about which I did not know. Thanks, as always, Gene!

Sorry, above I mis-[typed TC10,0251 when I meant TC10,251. Sorry.

All the cars listed as "VIC09" on the year column on Gene's Stein List are Australian cars not New Zealand cars. I emailed Bob Stein about this some time back.

The last TC made was TC10251 with engine number XPAG 10855 on 29-Nov-1949.

This is the T Register in the UK which has all the production records from the factory. Hope this helps.

Ed - unfortunately the on-line information in the Production Records was manually input (a Herculean task), and there are consequently human errors introduced. The most frustrating is that not enough spaces were allowed for every character of the long engine numbers starting with XPAG/TD2/LHX/XXXXX, where the final digit is always omitted.

There are also omissions, transpositions, and other errors - in one case the (generally superb)inputters recorded the original engine number of a TD, and not the replacement engine fitted when the original was found to be defective before shipment. The owner had been unhappy that his car had the incorrect engine, when in reality it was the final one installed at the factory.

The manual Production Record ledgers, of which I have copies, showed the true situation and are still the authoritative source, although even THEY are not flawless...

I think the records become far more muddied with the TD, with so many being produced and so many different variations. I have TD0260 which was made in the first production run from 10th November to 24th November, mine was made on 15th November 1949. Most of these 17 cars were RHD EXR most were sent to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. TD0251 was given the engine number XPAG/TD/13117 clearly using the TC run of engine numbers being the first one.I have tried very hard to get more information on these 17 cars without scuttle hoop's. 66 years has made it very hard and very muddied.

I have found doing the research on my TC far easier as it was a far simpler car with no where near as many variances as the TD. We also have a strong knowledge base here in Perth but like you said there is always room for human error and TC10252 may in fact exist. Wouldn't that cause a stir!

Been a T Type tragic for too long
Cheers from Perth
