How do you purge a tank before you weld on it ? Charlie |

I filled my with water till it was completely full turned the hole up and welded. It was a pain drying it out afterwards. You can also fill the tank with inert gas and then weld. Or better yet take to a welding shop and let them do it. |

I'd let a professional do it. There is a serious risk involved when welding on a fuel tank. If you really want to do it yourself, search Google for methods. I'd rather not suggest anything myself in case your tank blows up! |

Charlie Filling it with water isn't safe Anyone that has done that won the roulette game, the guys that didn't win can't tell you not to do it anymore because--- There is a method I use but like Steve, there is no way in the world I'm going to suggest it to anybody to use Take it to a pro and live to enjoy the result |

Take it to your local radiator repair shop. They will flush the tank. They can then do the needed repairs. I have hat this done many times. Gary |

The last time I tried to weld a tank with water in it (many years ago) I heard and felt an almighty POP, and the tank was never the same. The sides and end had bulged, and I owed the customer a new tank. Don't do it. A radiator shop will hot-tank the fuel tank, and remove all traces of fuel AND fumes. The latter is the killer, and can stick around in a tank for a long while. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Thanks for your comments. I'll get it hot tanked. I felt the water method was dodgy. I was hoping to avoid having to repaint it . Charlie |

Took mine to a rad. shop who cut a hole in the back. Flushed it totally clean and then rewelded the removed plate back. Ground down the weld and sprayed in primer. Highly recommended method which allows full access to the baffle plates. |

Glad I was not around when this happened. (Not mine).

Charlie, do not even think about welding on the gas tank! It is nearly impossible to clean the tank so that there is absolutely no vapour left in the tank. What I have done with good success is to solder patches over small rust holes using a very large soldering iron. The soldering iron was heated with a torch (well away from the tank) and the patch soldered to the previously cleaned area around the rust hole. As an added precaution I filled the tank with carbon dioxide from my MIG welder tank. Be sure there are no flakey bits of paint around the area you are soldering since, if they start glowing, they will be hot enough to ignite the gas vapour.
