MG TD TF 1500 - TC restoration on TV

I can't remember the name of the TV show last night (duh!) but it was a complete TC restoration including a new tub showing it being built in UK and lots of racing footage. It stared the new sidekick of Mike Brewer on the new season of Wheeler Dealers starting this week. His name is Ant Anstead that and he's replacing Edd China on that show. Keep an eye out for it if you like TC's.

I watched it ... Twice

Show was entitled "For the Love of Cars". Older series with Ant Anstead as the mechanic...sort of a not so cheeky Wheeler Dealers except they planned to auction the car after the episode, instead of selling to a private buyer as the climax of the episode. Most of the show dwelt on Ant's partner getting to know and appreciate the charms of the TC. Quite surprised to see it surface on Velocity...have seen it on You Tube.

That brings back memories. The episode was shot in 2013 and aired in 2014. They did a whole series with different iconic British cars.

The problem with that show (for me) is that they hardly cover the actual work on the car. I enjoy the history and vintage films relating to cars but I really want to see the mechanical work being done. I hope the new Wheeler Dealers follows its original format.

They did a Triumph Stag last night. I had never heard of this show before. No, they don't go into great mechanical detail.
Rumor is that Edd left the show for the very reason Tim brings up above. Edd has his own Utube channel now if you are interested in his life.

This thread caused me to look up the episode. It was a fun watch, and I agree that not enough is shown of the actual mechanical work. It's a shame.

Steve Simmons, by the way, you are being quite modest - you actually were featured for a good few minutes during the US portion of the program.

That is what I heard Efh. Edd left because velocity wanted less of the mechanical. Can't believe they think we enjoy all the fluff stuff.

Bruce, wait for all the product placements and adds in the new WDs show like on the PowerNation shows. I hope I'm wrong.

The new WD starts this week.

Wheeler Dealers was rather sad last year with the move to California. Lots of fluff with with little substance. Mike attempting to do work that Edd was much better qualified to do and explain. I suspect it will much worse without Mr. China on board.
L E D LaVerne

I agree with LaVerne and so does the "web" but I'm willing to give it a chance. What else do us old farts have to do, eh?

Been thinking about the "For The Love of Cars" episode on the TC; the more I think about it the more disappointing it was. Some film cut from vintage stock (sometimes TCs, sometimes TDs); TCs in California and England driving around and virtually no actual work being shown.

This was a way over the top, no expense spared rebuild...way beyond restoration. Other than the frame, suspension, the dash and the transmission everything was replaced...on an already overpriced example. A couple of shots of work happening but nothing of substance.

Sure hope WD does not go this way, afraid that it will.

I don't think For The Love Of Cars was meant to be a restoration show, but rather a car show for the masses. Guys like us will always be disappointed unless they show every nut and bolt, but we need shows to present the classic car hobby to everyday people also. I think that's what they were trying to achieve.

While I would have liked more restoration footage, I do commend them for diving into the people side of things, which most shows don't do. I'm definitely tired of watching guys "restore" cars while yelling and fighting with each other and barely making some kind of phony time limit. American Choppers made it popular and it was all downhill from there. But that's what people like, so that's what pays the production bills... unfortunately.

Bobby, I had no idea at the time they would feature me like that. It was kind of embarrassing. I was mainly there to support my good friend Joe, who was interviewed in the show.
Steve Simmons

I liked the land rover episode. I would have loved to see a bit more of the restoration. The other thing I think would be interesting is if at the end of the show they included how much time it took to do the rebuild.

At least with the Fantom Works show, they sometimes include the total cost of the build. And I have heard them give the time it took.
Bruce Cunha

Bruce, I've noticed in recent FantomWorks shows they skip the accounting. Wonder why.

Yea, I noted that on the last show. Somewhat of a shame as folks need to know what it costs to do these restorations. I feel it would help with the prices asked for some of these cars. I see so many old car owners that think their well used old car is a goldmine, when in reality, it will cost 40 to 80 thousand for a professional restoration.
