MG TD TF 1500 - TC steering column
Is anyone aware as to whether roller bearings are available to replace the felt bush as used at the top of the steering column? In this particular case on a TC |

I used a brass bush, works well. Peter |

I have roller bearings in my road and race TCs, but I can't remember what the part number was. I always think that it is not ideal because the rollers run direct on a non-hardened shaft. I don't think there is anything wrong with the original felt, although when it compresses, it does allow movement. Brass sounds like a good option too. Some type of Teflon, nylon or similar might also be good. Bob Schapel |

The felt also absorbs some amount of road shock. If I were fitting bearings, I would want to put a sleeve on the shaft, or at least machine it perfectly smooth. Once the bearing or shaft starts to wear and you get play, I'd imagine it would clunk, unlike felt which just wiggles a little. Felt was used right up to the last MGB models as I recall. |

There is a chap in Melton Mowbray who sells " MG TA TB and TC steering column upper bushes made from self lubricating plastic called 'Oilon'.' If you Google 'paulbuzz7' you should get to his site.If you then click on his other items you will hopefully find them. Shame he doesn't do them for TDs. Lionel TD3490. |
