MG TD TF 1500 - TD Cam shaft
Please anybody, Can anyone describe a way of telling whether my TD cam-shaft is of the older type, rocker clearance .019" or the modified type with the .012" clearance. My engine no. is well within the earlier type but Neil Cairns states in his book, "Living with the XPAG", that it is very unlikely to still have an early cam-shaft. It would be nice to know for sure though, in order to get the tappets right. Neil Cairns does give a method in his book but I don't fully understand it. Any advice appreciated. John |

Depends the rocker clearance only to the cam shaft or is it influenced by the rocker shaft too? @ Dave I send an email. |

That method is great for original XPAG cams. Keep in mind Crane made an XPAG cam as early as 1987, that is likely different. George |

From my experience the standard TC camshafts had two circles machined in the back end of the shaft. The later camshaft had one circle. If you post a photo taken from the rear of the camshaft the profile of the lobes should also be recognisable. Experienced T-Type specialists should be able to pick which it is. The early cam has rounder lobes and more overlap while the later cam has sharper lobes. Of course all this assumes it is one of the original cams you mention. Regrinds etc will make the task impossible without proper measuring. Bob Schapel |
