MG TD TF 1500 - TD castor angle adaption
A friend of mine is thinking about creating an adaption for the castor. Purpose is to improve steering behavior (self correcting). It looks pretty complicated. So, maybe someone already found a way to do this. Any experience or suggestions? Greetings from the Netherlands, Huib |

Is your friend a mechanical engineer specializing in automotive suspension and steering systems? Short of that, even if he had decades of field work at race tracks I would be skeptical. These cars have almost 3/4 of a century of field trials. I have had my car for over 2 decades, driven it across a significant part of the U.S. in various road, traffic, speed and weather conditions, and I still trust the work of the folks at Morris Garages. Not 100% sure but I think all this work has been done by various companies for racing MGB's with their conversion kits to telescopic shock abbsorbers. Some are available with adjustable arms to vary camber and caster. |

Hello Huib,
I've been enquiring about my welded chassis some years ago. https://mg-cars.org.uk/cgi-bin/or17?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=8&subjectar=8&thread=2016040819302120799 I recently discovered some small wedges under the steering rack. Meaning that the castor angle is changed. Was it done intentionnaly ? Or was it to compensate a chassis fix that was not exacly in line ? Anyway that is a way to change the castor angle. Probably not the simplest. Note that the car handles very well. Laurent. |

At Tom: he is a mechanical/automotive engineer and loves to experiment. At BW: could be interesting to see how its done for the MGB. Thanks for the suggestion. At Laurant: to my understanding it is not about the steeringrack position but all about the elements that position and move the kingpin greetings, huib |

Huib, First check your tyre pressure, radial tyres 26/28psi. Then check toe-in is nil. now check the correct Metric bolts are in the wishbone pivot to ensure the correct position and that the wishbone bushes are not extruded. I use MGB competition bushes. If your car has not been accident damaged then it should self centre easily. I have had my TF 50 years and it always self centres with quite light steering. (by 1950's standards) Ray TF2884 |

Sorry, I was not clear enough. The chassis frame was cut and then welded so that the cross member (and the king pins) have a modified angle. The wedges under the steering rack are just a clue of this. Laurent. |
