MG TD TF 1500 - TD Choke control

Hi,

Just bought a 1953 TD with a choke control that has the usual problem of the knob not staying out when you pull and turn. The traditional clothes peg is required.

Does anyone know whether a new reproduction choke cable assembly will work properly for any length of time, or is it not worth buying?

Arnie,
I sincerely hope you are using an original wooden clothes peg and not one of those horrible cheapo plastic repros!

You could contact NTG and ask them if their cable is an original reproduction. Their products are good even if their postage is extortional.

There is a little brass detent that is held in by a spring sleeve.
These can go missing.
If so the cable will not stay put.
They can be remade with a bit of effort.

Arnie - e-mail me at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net and I'll send you some information on refurbishing the choke cable. Cheers - Dave

I've had good luck with one of the cables supplied by Moss. You do need to install it with a twist to the inner cable where it attaches to the levers at the bottom of the carb. This sets it up for the detent feature to work properly.

Thanks everyone for all your help. This forum is a great way for MG enthusiasts to get together to swap ideas and information.
Our wooden traditional one careful owner clothes peg will be available on ebay shortly!

Hi Arnie,

If you check the outer part of the choke control - the bit that pokes through the dash - you will see a spring collar, about 1/4" wide. Slide this down the shaft to expose a slot in the shaft. The brass detent should fit into this and this engages with teeth on the stem with the knob. Once you look at it in the flesh it is obvious how it works and why you have to twist the inner cable when fixing it to the carbs. My detent was missing and I managed to file one up using a suitably sized washer. You will need good jaws on your vice though because it is very small.
