MG TD TF 1500 - TD clock; repair of; who?

I’ve got a TD and the clock is not working. I’m not sure who is currently doing clock repairs. I know Hal Kramer used to do it. Your recommendations would be appreciated.

Try clocks4classics.com and get the kit. Not difficult.

You might contact Hugh Pite as well. He just did my chronometric tach, speedo and clock.

The clock is simple and easy to service yourself Milton as it's quite robust and well designed. Faults are almost always traced back to one or more of three possible causes. The most likely is carbonisation of the both the pin and whisker. The second is an accumulation of dirt in the pivots and or lack of lubrication. The third is much less likely, a coil that has either short circuited or gone open circuit. I looked at buying the conversion kit but after decarbonising the pin and giving it a good clean, it ran beautifully. I can send you a 'how to' if you'd like to do it yourself. Cheers

I have used Mike Eck at https://www.jaguarclock.com/
for Smiths clocks. He is in New Jersey.

Peter, please send me your “how-to.” Thanks.

Huge Pite did mine. Added the needed resistor so it continues to run.

Unfortunately sparking and carbonisation of the whisker contact is inherent in the clock design and thus is likely to recur in the next year or two after cleaning.
There's already a resistor in the clock design, used as a basic attempt to quench the spark, which clearly doesn't work long term.
If the clock is mechanically restorable I think you will need at least a diode across the contact, or better add a transistor circuit to reduce the current through the contacts.
The clocks4classics upgrade neatly gets rid of the problem entirely.

Hi Bruce, the circuit I used in you clock comprised a transistor, a diode and a resistor. As pointed out, a resistor by itself will have little effect on the longevity of the clock's points.

I've a TF1500 that when purchased had no clock fitted- It's a Jaeger speedometer and I assume had a Smiths clock fitted to the rear. Point is does anyone have one please?

Hugh, There was a time in my life when I knew the difference. Thanks for the correction

Thank you all for your helpful comments.
