MG TD TF 1500 - TD clutch problem

I have a TD with a new pressure plate, disc, and throw out bearing. I can't get a decent adjustment on the assembly. When I adjust it so that the transmission will go into gear, the fingers of the pressure plate are touching the damper springs of the disc. There is an extremely small window of adjustment that allows the gears to be shifted into (barely) without hitting the disc. I have fabricated a stop to prevent hitting the disc, but the adjustment is so critical that it is not going to be useable for my customer. I have adjusted the linkage to match a TD that works properly. I have the correct amount of free travel. Everything seems to be proper, correct, and in it's place, but it just won't work well. I've never had a problem like this before, so I'm hoping that one of you has, and can advise me. I'm stumped! Thanks, John

Is the driven plate in the right way round?. The shorter splined section should be on the flywheel slide.

I should have said that if it is wrong, the carrier plate binds inside the flywheel so the only one side of the driven plate is in contact with the drive plates (flywheel and cover). see WSM fig E1
The old plates were marked as to how to fit but some modern plates are not.

Yes, the driven plate, or disc, is in correctly. Flat side toward flywheel.

Possibly bent the clutch plate fitting the gearbox up to it maybe-----------or not--?

If it's not bent the situation will improve as the plate wears in and will get better and better with wear, maybe a little trip down the road and slip the clutch a tiddle to buzz the fluff off the new plate could do it for you

There have been some defective pressure plates around in the past couple years. Search the archives. I recall that this started with non-branded plates. There are likely some Borg and Beck originals out there somewhere. William could be correct as well. Maybe measure the new disk and compare thickness to some others? George

Could you advise if the system worked before (even if the clutch was worn, and perhaps slipped)? Also, what is the diameter of the clutch cross shaft, and what size clutch was fitted? And what is the connection from the pedal - is it cable or rod?
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "window of adjustment" - do you mean length of adjustment. With a rod connection there is only one adjustment, but with cable there are two adjustments.
