MG TD TF 1500 - TD Door Latches
The screws holding my door striker in are stripped out, ie the screw holes in the wood are tore up and the wood screws wont hold. Does anyone have any suggestions on a way to fix this without taking the car apart to change out the wood? Its kinda out of my skill set to do that. Any help graciously appreciated. Mark |

Hi Mark The usual way is to drill out and glue in a piece of suitable dowel. When dry drill a pilot hole and refit the screws. I have several such on my TD. Barry |

There are a number of resin based products that can be mixed and packed into the hole which when set can be drilled with a pilot hole before screwing in. |

The wood screws on both the lock and striker are an accident just waiting to happen Mark. A really poor piece of design. I replaced the screws by modifying a couple of captive nut plates to include two captive nuts at the front corners of the lock and another two on the striker backing plate. It just required removal of the door card and also the front 1/4 panel trim. The added bonus is that this mod enables fine adjustment of both lock and striker. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

The old way is to take a few toothpicks, apply wood glue to them, and pound them into the hole. That is a quick fix, but Barry's solution is more permanent. If you are really picky, you can get small wood dowels made of ash. |

Toothpicks are fairly hard wood and work great. Pack as many in as you can , use a good wood glue, let it set, drill and fasten back together. George |

Hi Why jam lots of small toothpicks when you can do the job properly by drilling and dowelling, takes the same amount of time and does a better neater and long lasting job. Barry |
