MG TD TF 1500 - TD fuel tank sender unit Gasket

Good evening all from Castle Acre in Norfolk UK. I am in the process of replacing my fuel tank and to install the sender unit. I have purchased, after much deliberation, a rubber gasket from dear old B and G rather than the original cork offering. My choice for this decision was made after reading various comments about cork failures. Would you fellow enthusiasts of the Mark and knowledgeable folk recommend me using any form of ' gasket gue' with rubber? Look forward to your considered opinions and thanks in anticipation. Regards Peter.

I believe that I just put plenty of sealant on the bolts. The rubber gasket should be good enough otherwise, providing the surfaces are flat.

Peter, if you were on this the Pond I would strongly suggest using the set of gaskets available from Abingdon Spares and follow their instructions. No rubber gaskets, and yes they do recommend Permatex #2. Bud

The AS gasket set is the best available & I second the use of Permatex 2. I'm restoring a sender unit at the moment & I won't use my Moss rubber gaskets because of problems identified in the archive here, as they react with ethanol & leak. My second choice would be cork with Permatex 2 on each side of the gasket & around the screws. Can't comment on the B & G rubber, but as ethanol & rubber don't happily coexist & even though I won't be using any ethanol in my fuel, I still wont be using rubber gaskets on my sender. Cheers

I used the ribbed rubber gasket from Peter Edney for the main seal. Not sure if this is the same as B&G's version but it has worked very well. Although possibly not required I used Permatex as I was paranoid about further leaks due to the sender's flange being slightly distorted.
I did need to buy longer screws due to the thickness of the rubber.

Thanks to all of you that have replied to my query. I am ordering some Permatex and will get on with the job. Now that I have the rubber gasket I shall use it but I have sent a message to Abingdon Spares to see if they will send me a hard copy catalog. Happy and incident free T type motoring to all, regards, Peter.
