MG TD TF 1500 - TD Glovebox Help
How is the glovebox mounted? My 52TD had no glovebox when I got it. A radio was fitted behind the door. I have a new glovebox (Moss) but I'm not sure how it is supported. Thanks in advance. |

B, try this link http://www.dbraun99.com/mgtd15470/Instrument%20%26%20Fascia%20Panel/Fascia%20%26%20Panel%20Restoration/slides/glove%20box%20and%20welting.html looks like it is stapeled around the opening to the sub dash,,, Steve |

Mine was screwed in place on TD 4834. Tiny taper head wood screws. Same size as the hinge screws I believe. Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

I provided a detailed how to in the archive including pics showing how to make a replica based on a couple of surviving originals. They were not stapled but screwed into the sub dash. This was the original means of attachment, again confirmed from surviving originals where the screw holes were clearly evident, including the one from Bill Chasser. I used un-plated brass CS slot heads as they are then almost invisible in the original brown flocking. For what it's worth the illustrations I've seen of the Moss box are markedly different to the original. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter Is this the thread you mentioned? http://www2.mg-cars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=8&subjectar=8&thread=2014110112392411482 If so did you post any copies of the patterns you used? Thanks Stuart |

OK. I see the screws around the glovebox opening. Is that the only attachment? Is there no support toward the rear of the box? |
B Mooney |
That's it Stuart. No patterns posted. I intend to write an article with all of the necessary details & dimensions once the car is finally on the road. If you have the original sub dash it's not that difficult to DIY. The only other dimension you need is to note that the original box was 10" deep. I've made a few for TD owners here using the ply jig that I knocked up that you can see in the thread above. None that I'm aware of B which is why I'm using one of my old belts that has somehow shrunk :-) This will loop over the brace for the sub dash & then be adjusted. Once the ply under dash is fitted it will be impossible to see. It seems the fibreboard absorbs moisture from the air which aids distortion, especially so if bulky items live in the glove box. I've attempted to combat that by painting both the interior & exterior with clear PVC wood glue to act as a sealer. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Thanks for the information. Since there is no "official" support for the back of the glovebox I devised my own. Shown in the first picture is the metal strip I fastened to the wooden frame under the scuttle. Picture #2 shows the box in place with the machine screw through the back bottom edge. When it is painted flat black it probably won't be noticeable at all. (all of my belts have shrunk so much they have been thrown away!) ![]() |

Should do the job B. If you want the original brown flocked finish to the interior I have a few bags of flocking left over from the order I imported from Germany @ US $5/bag plus postage. Best results come from spraying the interior with mission brown enamel ensuring complete coverage, dumping in the contents of the bag, place the box in a plastic bag to cover the opening & then shake vigorously. Work quickly while the paint is still wet. Invert the box to remove the excess. Also makes the fixings less obvious. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Thanks Peter. Do you think it's possible to apply the brown flocking over the black flocking that's already there? |
B Mooney |
No problem. You will need to remove the glovebox to use the method I've outlined above. I'd rough up the existing flocking with some sandpaper removing as much as you can without being too fussy & go from there. I've applied a second coat of flocking over the first when I'd missed a couple of areas with the Mission Brown paint. The whole flocking operation takes less than two minutes. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
