MG TD TF 1500 - TD rear brake inspection

Hello all, I have just acquired a TD after 44 years of other MG models. I need to check all the running gear before my first adventure on the public roads. Any tips from fellow owners on rear brake drum removal without access to a suitable hub puller? Thanks in advance of the magic answer. Regards Peter.

Peter,

Many questions first.

Was it used as a regular driver?
How long has the car been sitting?
Was it stored in a climate controlled atmosphere?
How does the brake fluid look and smell?

If you don't know the cars recent history you need to know the exact condition of those brakes.

NEVER take shortcuts when it comes to the brakes.

Ask me how I know.

P J,

Just one guy's experience. Car was restored around 1985. Brake drums never off since I purchased it in 2002. This winter I did a complete brake job. Rear drums came off with minimal effort. Did have a puller but never even put a wrench on it. I think a few taps with a dead-blow hammer would have done it. Good luck. Take lots of pictures. If you redo the backing plates they can be assembled incorrectly. I know.

Hi PJ, when I did my rear brakes both of the drums came off quite easily. Make sure you slacken the adjusters right back so the shoes are well clear. If you do need a puller, use one that pulls on the wheel studs rather than the edge of the drum. Good luck, Matt

Lots of info in the archives. Only 1 adjuster on rear brakes, removed castellated nut and hub should easily pull off. I also live in Norfolk, West Somerton. Anywhere near you?

Hi Peter,
The rear axle nuts need to be at 150lbs/foot or the splines will get damaged. Also the threads are right handed on BOTH sides.

Ray, thank you for that valuable information. Peter

A gear puller set from Harbor Freight is a cheap reasonable investment...
