MG TD TF 1500 - TD seat back springs
Good day to all, I am beginning to look at my seat condition. I have dismantled the seat back and I believe the springs are salvageable, but I have a broken spring. It is a single, clean break. Is there a practical way to repair this spring? I don't want to replace a single sprint if I can help it. It just looks like a can of worms that I don't want to open. What do you think? Thanks for your help, Jim TD17744 |

Could you slide a small tube over the broken sections and crimp it in place? Aluminum tube available at hobby shops might work. |

Jim, in a moment of weakness I bought a TD seat back in very good condition. It's red leather so it probably wouldn't match your upholstery but that can always be changed. I have no idea what the shipping cost would be from Greenville SC to where you are in TN. I have a friend in Chattanooga who visits occasionally and he could certainly take it back with him if that would help. I'll post a picture later. I'll sell it for $75 plus shipping. Jud |

Jud, if Jim doesn't want it - I do. My red leather seatback is beginning to show splits after 25 years. I'd be happy to get it here in Marietta, GA. I could come and get it. Bud |

Jim and Bud, here are the pics of the seat back. I notice some stains at the top which I think (hope?) are just grease stains that will wash off. I also notice what could be a cigarette burn in the middle. I'm a smoker but I'm not responsible for whatever this is.

Thanks for the offer, Jud. I was out of pocket and missed your post. Looks like Bud will put it to good use. Hey Bud, It looks like you may end up with two spring sets. I think I will still try to repair mine, but if you want to get rid of one of your sets, let me know. Jim |

Jim, I'm going to be off line for a few weeks. We had a major housing breakdown last Thursday morning. About 300 sq. ft. of ceiling collapsed. In the house, not in the garage. Lazarus is fine, but he's now undercover and is being used as storage space for boxes of household stuff. It'll be some weeks (3?) before I can get at him. Where are you in Tennessee? Bud |

Bud, Sorry to hear about your ceiling issue. I am in no hurry, so just contact me when things calm down. In the meantime, I am going to try John's "sleeve" method and see if that works. I am in the Nashville area. Jim |

Follow up, I took John's advice and went to to a hobby store and found some tubing. While I was there, I noticed some spring-like tubing that is intended as a tool for bending the aluminum tubing. It slid over my spring (actually, it kind of screwed over the spring). Photo attached. It is not crimped at all. What do you thing? Look like a reasonable solution? Jim ![]() |
